Remembering Viji Srinavasan

June 13th is the fifth anniversary of the death of Viji Srinavasan.
Viji dedicated her life to empowering and supporting women. In 1988 she set up Adithi, a network that works with women and girls in Bihar, India. At the time of her death in 2005 the Adithi network covered 25 organisations in Bihar and Jharkhand reaching out to 200,000 women and girls.
Viji worked to improve the livelihoods of rural women, working with fisherwomen, sharecroppers and farmers, homebased workers, street vendors, adivasi women and the daughters of traditional sex workers. The women’s movement she began continues to challenge the many forms of women’s oppression and addresses issues such as, violence against women, landlessness, female infanticide, prostitution and AIDS. From 2000-2005 she was the regional coordinator for HWW in South Asia
Viji’s work concentrated on women and girls in Bihar, but she was an also an inspiration to her many friends all over the world.
An event was held in Patna, Bihar on 13th June, organised by Adithi and other groups inspired by her work. The event was organised to remember Viji, and to build on her legacy by continuing her mission to liberate and empower women.
