Gap, NEXT and M&S in ‘sweatshop’ scandal
Posted 16th August 2010

An Observer investigation has revealed low pay and excessive overtime at Indian suppliers of major high street chains, including Gap, Next and Marks and Spencer.

Workers were found earning as little as 25p per hour, and working up to 16 hours a day. M&S, Gap and Next have all launched their own inquiries into the abuses and pledged to end the practice of excessive overtime.

One worker described how he had worked every day for a month, putting in 150 hours of overtime, and that he had no option but to work the overtime if he wanted to keep his job.

Gap, Next and M&S are all members of the Ethical Trading Initiative, pledged to improve working conditions in their supply chains. M&S in particular has run a major marketing campaign promoting its ethical approach to business. Despite all this, retailers on the British high street have once again found themselves linked to the exploitation of workers that breaches legal minimum conditions, let alone higher ‘ethical’ standards.
