First Round Victory in ILO Fight for Domestic Workers
Posted
6th July 2010
Domestic workers fighting for rights and recognition won a crucial first round victory at this year's International Labour Conference at the ILO in Geneva.
Homeworkers’ rights are set down in an ILO Convention on Home Work, and we hope that domestic workers will soon secure the same recognition. On June 4, 61 governments voted in favour of a Convention on Domestic Work supplemented by a Recommendation, against 14 voting for a Recommendation only.
Despite the substantial progress made at this first discussion, a number of challenges remain for the second and final discussion in 2011. The International Domestic Workers’ Network (IDWN) will have to mobilize strong support in preparation for 2011.
