Call for solidarity with Bangladeshi garment workers
Posted
10th August 2010
An international solidarity campaign is building to demand better terms and conditions for 3.5 million Bangladeshi textile workers, who are striking and demonstrating for, among other things, a higher minimum wage of 5,000 taka a month - just £45.
In response to the strikes the Bangladeshi Government has proposed an increase in the minimum wage to 3,000 taka, but this is clearly insufficient to cover the basic needs of workers and their families
And the Government is cracking down on protests. Arrests warrants have now been issued against many workers and labour rights leaders. The Bangladesh Center for Worker Solidarity (BCWS), an internationally renowned labour organisation, was stripped of its legal status in June. BCWS and its leaders are particular targets of this government crackdown on worker organizing, blamed for “fomenting unrest and agitation in the garment sector” in an official government brief.
ACT NOW to support the Bangladeshi garments workers and their right to a decent minimum wage.
