Adithi (Agriculture, Dairying, Industries, Tree Plantation, Handicrafts/Homebased work and the Integration of Women) founded by Viji Srinivasan, in 1988, reaches out to over 100,000 rural women and girls through its 25 constituent organisations. Adithi is based in Patna, Bihar.
Nari Dhan, based in Sitamarhi District, in North Bihar, is a federation of rural women with about 4,000 members. Most of its members do agricultural work part of the year and homebased work in the slack season. They are organised in Self Help Groups and are active in fighting against oppression and violence against women as well as on social and economic issues.
Gogobaisi, is a Santali women’s cooperative, based in Jarmundi, Dumka District of Jharkhand. In this district, many women are from the indigenous Santali community and depend on homebased work for their livelihoods.
Read (Rural Education and Development), in Pudukkottai in the southern state of Tamilnadu has been working with homebased workers since 2001. Through this work an independent federation, Pasumai (Green) has been set up with about 5,000 women members.
Pasumai organises savings groups and loans for its members and helps them buy raw materials in bulk and sell their products together. Many women make clothes for local sales; flower garlands and pottery. Others are dependent workers polishing artificial diamonds.
The Self Employed Women’s Association, of Ahmedabad, Gujarat, is one of the oldest and largest organisations of informal women workers, including homebased workers. SEWA has its own bank and provides many services to its members. SEWA worked for many years to lobby trade unions and others for the ILO to adopt a Convention on Home Work.
Working Women’s Forum, of Chennai (Madras) in the South is another large women’s trade union. Many members of this union are also homebased workers. The union has broad programmes for credit and savings and other activities for homebased workers and others. It also worked with women in the fishing villages on the coast, affected by the recent tsunami.
